Instead of Reinventing the Wheel

Being a computer programmer at heart, sometimes I find myself coming up with an idea for a new type of software.  This can be a good opportunity to make a quick buck, or just test my skills at creating a new piece of software.

But I make sure to see if someone has already created a software package that addresses the problem.  I don’t feel like there is any point in reinventing the wheel and I am happy to support other programmers if I find something I like.

In fact, I did buy software today.  You see, I was trying to convert a CSV to HTML and instead of whipping up my own application (which would have taken too much time), I just bought it instead.

I also found some wedding planner software that I am sure my future sister-in-law would love.  All in all, it was a good day to find useful software.

Powerful Student Employment Resource

One of the goals of the college that I have been working for is to make sure that we can do whatever we can when it comes to finding our students jobs after they are done their degree.  In fact, we take this matter seriously as we want our students to succeed after they leave our school and find the career that they have always dreamed of.

Finding our students a job hasn’t always been easy, but we have been looking for other resources that we could use to help them find a career.

One of these resources has been a job listings website that we found that offers listings from local businesses that specialize in the administration jobs and IT jobs that our school specializes in.

So far, the results have been good with most of our students taking advantage of this new resource.  In fact, it is looking like we will have more graduates employed by convocation than we have ever had in the past.

Delayed Honeymoon

When my husband and I were married four years ago, we did not take a honeymoon. We decided that we would use the money to buy a house instead. He surprised me at Christmas time with tickets to Las Vegas NASCAR. He said it would be the honeymoon that we never had, as we both love NASCAR and neither one of us had ever been to Vegas before.

We had heard all about the Las Vegas casinos, but we did not realize how much there was to experience, even for someone who does not gamble. Las Vegas is really an incredible city to visit and there was so much more to see there than we could have possibly fit in to our week.

The race was great and our favorite driver won. We think that we should go back every year to experience even more than we got to this time.

Taking an Expert’s Advice

I am the first to admit that I don’t know everything.  This was very hard for me to come to grips with it since my parents both think that they know everything.  But, I realized at a young age that there was no way that I would be able to know everything and that from time to time that I would have to rely on others for advice.

So, when my computer started to act funny, I knew that I was going to have to figure out what was wrong with it.  I was able to find an online troubleshooting guide to help me through it and all things pointed to the chance that my computer was infected with spyware.

I went from this point to find as many reviews of spyware removal software that I could, and I decided to follow the advice found in a SpyHunter review article that I read.

Now, I depend on SpyHunter to make sure that my computer is running smoothly and spyware-free.  So far it has worked great.

Easy Upsell to HD TV Customers

One of the things that I have learned over the years working in sales is that there is a good opportunity for an upsell once you have the customer sold on the product.  I was introduced to this at an early age at my first job in a coffee shop, with this simple line “would you like a donut with your coffee?”

Now, many years later, the same mantra holds true – I go for the upsell after getting the sale.  Currently, I am working in an electronics department selling HD TVs and working on commission.  We don’t make a whole lot on television sales, but if we can get the customer to purchase another product at the time of sale, we get a bonus.

So, lately I have been aggressively upselling the customers on TV screen protection as a smart investment.  This is definitely an easy sale for parents with young children, who don’t hesitate to buy a tv screen protector at all.

If you are working in electronics sales, take advantage of this tip – you can easily increase your commissions per customer by selling them this useful and essential accessory.

My Son in Print

When my son was four years old, I took a black and white picture of him on a tire swing and everyone absolutely loved it. My sister thought that I should submit it as stock photos royalty free and try to make some money from it. I had never thought of this before and I decided to look into it.

I checked out several different stock photography companies and actually submitted the photo to eight different ones before it was accepted. The company that accepted it said that it was beautiful work and that I should send them some samples of my other work.

Imagine my surprise when I received my very first royalty check for the picture of my son. It was even more surprising to see my stock photo in print on a calendar. My son was thrilled with it and we hung it on his wall. It is now June all year long.
