His Job is His Life

A couple of months ago my husband started his own SEO company and we thought that it would be great.  In fact, I find it really annoying and I think that his company is actually becoming a wedge between the two of us.

When I try to find some time to just be a couple again all I hear about is SEO this and SEO that.  It is very tiring when I just want to have a conversation with him about the kids or the house or anything besides his work and he can not tune out his job long enough to become a husband again.

I was really proud of him when he became an SEO consultant because I knew that this had always been his dream and he was finally doing what he loved.  Never once did I suspect that it would have such an impact and that it would become his life.

What I Learned From Cooking

Recipes are a family fascination. Mother has three file drawers filled with cookbooks and she hasn’t cooked in years. Some recipes are complicated, some are simple — kind of like life.

For about half of the first nine years of school, I instructed my daughter at home off and on. The other half she attended public school. Our PTA in Maryland did something I wish school systems around here would adopt. They implemented a uniform policy. The requirements were simple:

  • Pants, skirts or jumpers in navy blue
  • White shirts of any kind except those without collars

During warm weather, navy shorts were acceptable and on cold winter days, navy blue sweats were the norm. Simple? You bet.

Every fall I stocked up on white golf shirts, a couple of pairs of shorts, a week’s worth of navy blue leggings and slacks, a couple of skirts and two sets of navy sweats. She was set for the year. See? Simple. Like life.

Decisions, Decisions

My best friend’s sister-in-law’s stepfather’s sister — I think I got all those familial connections right — was recently widowed. Aunt Hattie is only 62, so it’s hard to believe Baby Boomers still have the kind of marriages where the husband does all the heavy lifting — physical or figurative. I can’t imagine never having pumped gas, taken out garbage, changed light bulbs, balanced a checkbook or bought a car. Aunt Hattie has done none of these.

If you know someone like her, encourage her to start planning for the future now. Tell her Aunt Hattie’s story. Help your loved one to visualize opening a California Medicare Supplement quote and wondering what to do about it, or getting a life insurance bill or Social Security Statement. Would she understand what they mean, how they apply to her and, above all, what to do?

Bereavement is hard enough. No woman should be left helpless at a time like that. Aunt Hattie is having to learn too much too quickly about things she should already know how to do.

Environmentally Friendly Companies

With the effects of global warming on everyone’s mind, there is been an increasing number of businesses that are making environmentally friendly choices.  Some good examples are companies recycling cardboard from boxes, shrinkwrap from pallets, and even pallets themselves.  It is these little steps that help reduce the amount of waste and pollution created by these businesses.

But there are a number of companies that are taking things one step further.  For example, new Costco warehouses have installed commercial solar systems on the roof of their buildings to reduce their energy consumption by up to 20%.  This not only saves the company money over the long run, but it also reduces the carbon footprint that their business generates.

It would be nice to see more of these large corporations taking up the torch and promoting environmentally friendly business practices.  But the reality of the matter is many of them are more focused on profit than taking care of the world that their business operates in.

Why Limit Yourself to One Language?

I have often wondered if a reader that doesn’t speak English would enjoy reading my blog.  I am sure that some of the stories I share here would honestly be of no interest to them, but there are other nuggets that may make it worth the read.

Now, I only know two languages, and honestly, my French is not as good as it used to be.  So, that would mean that I am in the position that I would either have to hire someone to translate each post on the site (there is a lot), or just find some sort of free website translation service.

I know that the computer generated translations are not as good as a human doing it, but they are close.  At least they work well enough so that another human can read it - and really that is my goal.

When I finally do get something in place, I am going to keep an eye to see if people do really find the other languages available on the site to be useful, or if I am just wasting my time.

Great Work Incentives

I have worked as a front desk agent of a hotel for about three years and I really like what I do. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I get along really well with my boss and the owners always have really great incentive programs. They are the type of people who just make you want to work hard at your job.

Last month, we had a staff promotion that everyone got really excited about. The staff member that could book the most honeymoon packages that month would get a free weekend trip to Las Vegas. We sure all worked hard trying to promote the hotel.

I did not win, but I am still proud of the number I sold. We tripled the number of packages sold from the month before and, since we all tried hard, we all got gift certificates to a great restaurant in town. All of us, that is, except for Brandy, who will be going to Vegas very soon.

Getting Prepared

I am in my third year of college and I realize that I have at least another year left before I have to start working on my dissertation, but I have been thinking a lot about it already as I don’t think that one can never be too prepared when the time comes.

In fact, every time I write an essay I wonder how I can utilize this information in later years and I think it will help prepare me for my postgraduate studies.  I have always been the type of person that stays one step ahead of the rest, as I don’t know how I could function otherwise.

I already know exactly what I’m going to write a thesis about and I have already started gathering information on the topic.  I actually enjoy doing the research already and I don’t think it is really going to be all that tough when the time comes.

Completing My Thesis

The past term in school has been a little bit of a change for me.  You see, I’ve been working on my graduate studies and instead of writing many dissertations, I’ve only been writing one paper the whole last term.

It has been quite a change for me that started with me creating a research proposal and has resulted in page after page of writing as I work to complete my thesis.  Sure, I do have two years to get it done, but I would rather get it done early than working on it with no pay when it is late.

After finally getting consistent results from the trials that I was doing for the experiments, writing a paper was time-consuming, but not hard.  It was nice to have some good discussions with my supervisor as I tried to interpret the results of my studies.

I think that I will be done writing earlier than my due date which will give me extra time to revise the paper before submitting it.  This way, I should be able to get an excellent mark.

Passing on Purchasing an Essay

I recently was offered a coupon from a website where you could buy essays and I had to decline.  You see, a good friend of mine had bought essays last term and she found herself expelled just a few days after buying those essays.  I just didn’t want to end up like that, as both my parents and myself are counting on me doing well in college.

I did the next best thing to buying an essay was going over to the essay assistance center on campus in getting the help I needed to make my psychology essay an exceptional piece of work.

At the essay assistance center, they were able help improve my writing skills as well as give me suggestions as to what I could do turn up with a killer essay for class.

Was it worth the time?  You bet.

Making Your Dream a Reality

Throughout our lives, many of us, come up with potentially great ideas for products or processes that have never been thought of before.  Even though most of these ideas could have potential, most people will not act on them as they don’t see the value of the final product.

But for the select few that do see the potential for profit, there are some challenges that they will face before they can turn their dream into a reality.  Perhaps the biggest one is presenting a product in an attempt to get funding to put it into production.

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to present the concept of the invention to a group of investors would be to hire an industrial design company to both design a prototype as well as detail the development cycle of the final product.  They will be able to lay out a roadmap of the product development as well as be able to come up with production costs.

With that information in hand, the inventor should have an easier time to present their product to potential investors and get it into production.
