The Most Favored Pet in the US in the Form of the Kind-Hearted and Obedient Labrador Retriever

by Bret Richardson

When you hear the name or see the remarkable creature Labrador Retriever, you can’t help but agree to the distinctions given to them as being gentle, friendly, family- oriented, trustworthy and intelligent. They are in fact one of America’s most favorite pets according to the American Kennel Club and everybody can agree to this. This breed is wonderfully pleasant, kind-looking, and gentle in temperament that you will probably make them your favorite dog the instant you meet them.

Originally from the icy territories of Canada specifically Newfoundland, these useful and lovable gentle dogs spread in fame at places such as North America and the world all over. Before their present fame, however, going back to Newfoundland, they were great companions to fishermen and game hunters in the region. This breed tagged along side the fishermen to haul in fishing nets and captures back the jerking fishes that are trying to escape the perils of the nets; with hunters, they swam freezing lakes and other bodies of water to retrieve the game quickly and efficiently.

Today, the Lab is not merely limited to the hunting job anymore because even inside the homes of delicate and active families, they are welcomed, sheltered, and hailed as a magnificent pet. Labs perfectly epitomizes the loving and fun pet image of almost every family for they are playful, energetic, stable- tempered, affectionate, naturally sweet and eager to please. With friends, strangers, and other animals; they are equably friendly and will interact harmoniously.

What makes this dog even more lovable is the fact that it is gentle hearted, naturally and sincerely sociable, and easy to train. Their intelligence and affectionate and kind spirit makes them very manageable and likable that you can’t help but love them and make them your favorite. Wherever you may take this dog, you can only expect excellence, obedience, and high intellect; so whether in hunting, dog shows or simple play times, this dog is an absolute winner and is without a doubt terrific!

Commonly, the breed comes in three different colors; yellow, black, and chocolate; these are the standard colors but other combinations or impurities of color are considered out of standard and is not given weight during competitions by the kennel clubs. Their fur is thick, short, and dense that it feels a bit hard when touched; they have outer and inner coats, too, that is water and weather resistant allowing them to survive any kind of weathers and any form of ground. Their body, longer and taller, is compact, sturdy, muscular, and strong that’s perfect for the high energy and endurance demands of hunting and other activities.

Labs make excellent playmates with children for they are inherently playful, gentle, friendly, and naturally affectionate and kind. As a house dog, they make reliable watch dogs but not as guard dogs as they are equally sociable to strangers and other dogs or animals. As a hunting buddy, they are what a retriever is supposed to be; fast, intelligent, agile, has a good nose for retrieving the game, and an absolutely great swimmer.

The Labrador Retriever is unquestionably great in terms of family affairs and their skills and talents are just overwhelmingly versatile and efficient that people of different sectors trusted them with other critical stuff. Now, this breed is not merely a favored family companion but a trustworthy and credible aid of the society in fight against disabilities, crimes and drugs. Labrador Retrievers are great for police work, narcotics detection, and guide for the blind, service dog for the disabled, search and rescue, sledding, and carting.

Every pet, no matter how docile or stubborn they are, needs an effective master in order for them to be the best that they can be. As for the Labs, a steady and firm hand that teaches and guides them are what it takes so they can be trained and honed to be better pets. The owner then, having a great pet such as the Lab must possess the qualities of a good leader and by saying so he must take control over the life and activities of the Labrador Retriever.

Celebrate Your Kitty’s Birthday Like Any Other Member Of Your Family

by Tammy Pilfinger

Have you ever heard a friend say pets are people too? That’s what you’ll hear from crazy pet lovers like me. People like me are the ones that dress their pet up in outfits. We also let them eat off of supper plates just like any guest would in our home. To people like us, pets are just like family members. We are just as concerned about their health and well being as we are about our actual kids. We fret about them and take great enjoyment in their individual quirks.

Everyone knows that there are tons of American women and men who have never had any children. Some people just aren’t capable of having children for one reason or another. Some individuals have purposefully chosen to be bachelors or otherwise single. Sometimes single adults find themselves longing for the gratification of raising a child. If having a real baby isn’t an option for whatever reason, some of these decent people may choose to substitute a pet as if it were their actual kid.

Who can blame these good people for desiring that kind of love in their lives? Cats and dogs are so lovable that it is easy to see how they fill that roll. Many of you probably know friends or relatives that treat their pet like it was one of their own children. Doing that doesn’t make them crazy.

So, if the pet is going to be a regular member of the family, why not have a birthday party for it on its birthday? Why not do what you would do for any other kid. You can make her a special pet treat style cake. Put a candle in it and help her blow it out. Sing happy birthday to her just like you would a child. Then when you’re done, go ahead and let her tear open her presents. If it is a kitty, you should wrap some kind of catnip toy in loose wrapping paper so she will be able to tear it apart like a kid.

Get out your video recorder. Don’t forget to tape the special moment so you can share it online. Look at how many other animal lovers have posted videos of their cats and dogs online there. There are some really good ones with dogs on there. If you don’t believe me take a look for yourself.

Even though you don’t have any human kids around home, or even if you do, it doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate your pet’s special day. Shop for some new kinds of toys for your little furry pal and enjoy the day just as you would with a actual child.

by Ryan Williams

Pet owners everywhere are at one time or another faced with the issue of how to get rid of fleas! When your pet gets infested with fleas it can be a terribly frustrating experience for both the owner and pet. Our local pet food store sells an assortment of flea collars, flea powders and flea shampoo including Frontline for fleas. Even though the staff are helpful, it is pretty hard to know which product to use and almost impossible to know all of the active ingredients of these dog flea products. There can be some hazardous side-effects of those well known but potentially highly harmful dog flea products. The chemicals used in some of the household name products and major national popular brands on the market may be poisoning our pets and marginalizing our own family?s health at the same time. So the question is, how to get rid of fleas safely?

As people become more aware of issues pertaining to their health, dog owners are seeking all-natural alternatives to the question of how to get rid of fleas. Some of the more common and popular all-natural dog flea remedies are sketched out below:

1. Household salt solution. Sprinkle table salt all over your house. Pay particular attention to where Fido takes his nap. Let the salt sit for at least one week and then look at the results. Fleas don?t seem to like salt. Your dog will lie down on the rugs, etc and the salt will also get on to his fur?fleas don?t like this. A few days later the fleas are gone.

2. Baking Soda to get rid of fleas. Cover your dog with baking soda. The baking soda will smother the fleas and kill them. This all-natural flea remedy is often recommended for puppies and kittens who are too young to be exposed to any flea remedy chemical. You can also use talcum powder or baby powder.

3. For the dog fleas on adult dogs, you could try an olive oil bath. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the fleas just drown in it and fall out. Start from the dog?s head and work your way back so the fleas don’t move to the face where it’s really hard to pluck them off. Then you just shampoo the oil out and the dog fleas will wash down the drain.

4. Some people think garlic is the best all-natural dog fleas remedy. Use freshly diced garlic. You can put a dab of oil into it in order to make it smoother plus the oil will make for a nice shiny coat. Some people use a garlic pill supplement while others use freshly chopped garlic and mix it into the food. The fleas don?t like the scent emitted by the dog after ingesting garlic.

The Shark Skin Dog: Chinese Shar Pei

by Tanya Warwick

Recognized the world over for its unique wrinkled coat and blue-black tongue, lets get to know the dog called the Shar Pei. Its also referred to by its other names, such as the sharkskin dog, the Chinese Shar Pei or Chinese Fighting Dog, because it was in China that it originated. The name Shar Pei can be roughly translated to sand paper skin, which takes into account its rough, prickly hide.

The Shar Pei are no doubt an ancient breed, because we can trace their ancestors to as far back as 2,000 years ago! The bluish tongue is unique to only one other breed, the chow-chow, and they are thought to be related. Because of the way it looks and its close link to the chow-chow, the Shar Pei has ties with the giant Mastiff breeds!

This animal sports the easily recognizable hippopotamus head, are of medium size, squarish in profile, and keep a comical frown. For a long time, Shar Pei were used as general-purpose farm dogs in the Chinese countryside, with tasks like protecting cattle (stock), hunting, and guarding the home and the family. The Chinese, believing that the scowling expression warded off evil spirits, raised the dog breed to look the way it does now, along with being intelligent and strong.

The loose skin and harsh coat were specifically bred into the Shar Pei in order to aid it in fighting, so that its opponent would find it next to impossible to grab and hold on to it. Possessing no undercoat, their coats do not need to be trimmed, but regular brushing would be perfect. The adults do not have as many wrinkly skin folds as the puppies, for this breed loses its wrinkles as it gets older.

They have three coat varieties: the horse-coat, the brush-coat, and the rare bear-coat. The horse-coat is prickly to the touch and is rough like sand, but the brush coat has longer hair and is softer to the touch. Their coats come in all solid colors and in sables too.

The Shar Pei is a very loyal dog, is faithful to his handler and bonds well with his family. They are smart, spunky, playful, dominant, and quite courageous. The Shar Pei are known for having a perpetually frowning expression, but they are calm, devoted, easygoing and independent little fellows.

The Shar Pei needs a firm, gentle, and consistent figure of authority to treat as alpha dog, as they are very clever and will end up dominating a weak trainer. They have a tendency to be stubborn, due to their instincts as fighters, but early training, socialization and exercise will easily remedy this. The Shar Pei have had myriad roles in history, including catching vermin, herding, and tracking, but if you know how to handle them, there is no reason they could not make perfectly desirable house companions for you.

When Your Dog Speaks, Do You Know What He’s Saying?

by Jim Navary

Your canine buddy has been watching you intently. As a result, it’s very likely that he knows much more about you than you know about him.

If you doubt that, tell me how he knows that when you grab your car keys and your wallet you are about to go for a ride.

Dogs can easily detect your emotions. They know when you are sad, cranky, or ready to play with them. They also learn the time and place for family meals and when it’s just about bed time.

So how much have you managed to learn about your dog? Probably not ten percent as much as he has taught himself about you. However, learning about him is fairly easy once you put your mind to it.

Your dog’s bark serves quite a few different purposes. One bark is used to repel others while another bark is used to attract. Can you detect the difference between his “go away” bark and his “Hey, I’m over here - where the heck are you?” bark? All but the most disinterested dog watchers will notice that dogs barking can range from a muted “woof” of thanks to the high-pitched “yelp” of alarm, to the loud series of angry barks that indicate he’s ready for a fight.

Sir John Lubbock, a 19th century British scientist, noted that when a dog barks it is an attempt to mimic the sound of the human voice. He pointed out that wild dogs may howl but they do not bark. The same can be said about coyotes, wolves, and other members of the canine family that have not heard humans speak or the barking of a domestic dog.

There is a world of difference between a bark and a growl. When a dog barks he raises his head leaving the vulnerable throat area exposed. It is definitely not a battle cry. However, when he growls he lowers his head, protecting his throat, indicating that he’s ready for an impending fight.

When you walk up to the front door of a house and the family dog comes charging toward the door barking loudly you are probably in no immediate danger. But… if he approaches you with his head lowered, growling menacingly, then look out - he’s ready to do battle.

If you stand absolutely still with your hands on your chest not one barking dog in ten will actually bite. However, if you make threatening gestures, or if you turn and run, your chances of one or more bites are extremely high. A strange dogs growl should never be disregarded by anyone who values his skin.

Why Is A Boston Terrier An Ideal Pet

by Abhik Sarkar

Canines’ History- The first Boston Terriers called Hooper’s Judge was bred in the in the USA in the nineteenth century as a fighter dog. He was a cross between a Bulldog and Terrier.

How to spot a Boston Terrier- Boston’s are small dogs with muscular bodies. Their chests are broad and necks slightly bent. Their facial features are prominent especially the eyes and nose. The eyes are big, dark and lively. The nose rather boxy in shape. They have typical terrier ears- small and sharp. Pelt colors range from black, brown and brindle with combination of white. Minimum cutting, shaving and general grooming is required. These dogs are the ultimate no mess or fuss pet.

Measurements- The doggy stands tall at 38 -43 cm. Weighing in at 5-11 Kilograms. Boston’s are well proportioned and according to International standards should not weigh less that 5 Kilograms or more than 12.5 Kilograms to be categorized as under or over weight. However the dog’s frame must be considered when weight is determined.

Character traits - Of all the terrier breeds Boston Terriers are the friendliest and most loving. However just as human personalities and temperaments differ so do animals’. Get use to neurotic behavior such as constant yapping and hyperactivity is you plan to make a Boston part of your family. On the up-side these dogs are easy to train due to the voice tone sensitivity, enthusiasm and high intelligence. The trainer or owner will just need a bit of patience, endurance and estimated 6 months for training. Strict or harsh training methods will fail terribly as the dog will feel pressured and intimidated. Once trained Boston’s are great house dogs.

General health problems- The dogs are unfortunately very inbred and poor breeding practices among dishonest breeders is the order of the day leading especially to mental retardation, a common condition associated with terriers. Other chronic health problems include breathing difficulties and other related conditions such as snoring, grunting and drooling. Due to the prominent position of the eyes, eye injuries also occur more frequently. Cesarean procedures are popular as natural births are too painful due to the large head-size of the pups and narrow shape of the pelvis.

Fitness and dietary requirements- Exercise and a balanced diet is key to keeping the dog healthy and behavioral problems to a minimum. Long walks, playing and chasing should be part of your Boston’s daily fitness routines to ensure tip-top shape. Steer clear from fatty and high fiber diets as this can lead to being overweight and extreme bloated feelings.

Living conditions- Boston’s adapt to any size home and play area from apartments to farms. As long as there is a park or playground close by for regular exercise the dog will be satisfied.

Life Expectation- These terriers have a life expectancy of 15 years and more. The fitter and healthy your doggy, the older he or she will get.

by Dr. Nortey Omaboe

No matter your destination, when traveling overseas with your pet dog, cat, ferret, bird, or other pet, doing your research can make your trip with your furry travel companion a seamless one. A trip to your pet’s veterinarian for rules and regulations and other necessities will likely be in order.

First, whenever traveling internationally, always carry an international rabies certification for the dog, cat, or ferret that’s with you. Your animal’s veterinarian should be fully familiar with this document. The date of vaccination on the certificate must be within 30 to 365 days of your arrival on foreign soil. Less than 30 days, the vaccination may not be in full effect. More than 365 days, and the vaccination may be expired.

The Swiss Federal Veterinary Office in each canton will also check to make sure that the rabies certification was issued in the region of your primary, or most recent, residence.

Other requirements consist of ensuring that animals traveling with you do not number more than five, that they will not be sold, or possession otherwise transferred, once inside Swiss borders, and that they are planned to act exclusively as pets.

Importation of canines with docked tails or cropped ears is forbidden.

An examination fee of CHF 88 will be collected for each cat, dog, or ferret at a customs stations or veterinary clinic.

Rules also pertain to pets that are traveling back into Switzerland, but do not affect pets traveling by public road or railway from other places in Europe.

Complete requirements for specific pets, including procedures and documentation, for travel to Switzerland as an individual with a pet can be found at the Swiss Customs site.

Swiss entrance regulations with a pet, as part of an intercontinental association can be found at the Swiss Mission site.

Customs regulations regarding importation of domesticated animals are in place for good reasons. Among which includes protection for you and your animal.

No matter if you are visiting or relocating to Switzerland, steer clear of a travel nightmare by making complete provisions for arrival with your furry friend. Compare your pet’s proper documentation to your own passport. Devoid of it, you and your dog, cat, bunny, or other travel companion will not be crossing the boundary together.

Tips For Litter Training Your Kitten

by Alexandra Kindrick

If you are planning on bringing home a new kitten it’s important to do some reading about litter box training first. Granted it isn’t the most fun topic but it is important to understand some of the basics ahead of time. By taking the proper steps right away you should have a much better chance of avoiding litter box problems in the future. Unfortunately many cats are given away because of they aren’t using the litter box regularly, but in many cases this can be avoided.

Cats naturally like to scratch in sand or dirt to dig a hole to relieve themselves and then cover it. Between this natural instinct to dig and watching their mother use a litter box, your new kitten will probably already be using a litter box by the time you bring her home. But with all the changes and being in a new home she will still need a little help.

Cats are private about their litter box habits so be sure you put the litter box in a quiet place that the kitten can easily access. When you bring her home take her over to the litter box and place her in it. She will likely jump out but that’s ok. You want to get her familiar with it. It’s good to put her in the litter box a few times a day until you notice she is using it regularly. If you notice her using it step back and let her have her privacy.

Cats usually start using the litter box pretty quickly, but if for some reason your kitten isn’t using it don’t punish her. This can confuse her or cause stress which can lead to other problems. Rather than scold it’s best to clean the mess well and start placing her in the litter box more frequently until she starts getting the hang of it. If she continues to mess outside of the litter box watch to see if she is either straining to go to the bathroom or has diarrhea. These could be signs of a medical problem which may be causing the litter box problems. In this case you will need to consult your vet.

You’ll have much better luck litter training your kitten if you keep the litter box in a quiet room where the kitten feels safe. Keep the litter box away from high traffic areas and away from loud appliances. It also needs to be convenient, so if you have multiple levels in your house you should keep a litter box on each level. And keep all litter boxes away from the feeding area. Not unlike us cats don’t like go go to the bathroom where they eat.

As a general rule it’s good to one litter box for each cat plus one extra. In small places this can be difficult so at minimum you should have one box for each cat.

Keep the litter box clean to avoid litter box problems. Cats are cleanly and sometimes picky; some cats won’t use a litter box that is too dirty or one that smells too much. Clean the box every day and set up a regular schedule to wash the box with a mild soap occasionally. Don’t use a cleaner with a strong smell for this because if the smell lingers it can deter your cat from using the box.

Cats are generally pretty easy to litter train, but by knowing some of the basics you should be able to prevent litter box problems in most cases.
