SEO Myths

For experienced internet marketers, SEO is a process learned over years of trial and error. It is a process of learning from your mistakes, but one that stand them in good stead eventually. A problem that many new internet marketers face however is the plethora of wrong and misleading information about SEO that seems to frequent blogs and forums today. Much of this information is content that has been circulating for years. It is content that has been rewritten by individuals pretending to know what they are on about, but in reality they do not have a clue. Below we outline two of these misinformation myths.

The myth that states that page rank is the biggest factor in determining website rankings, is the first one. This statement is a false one, full stop. Perform a search on Google, for example, for any keyword of your choice, and you will find that in most of the results PR 0 or PR 1 sites outrank PR 4 and PR 5 sites, as well as PR 7 sites ranking below PR 1 sites. There are many factors that Google uses to figure out page rank, and none are more dominant than others.

Myth two is the one that specifies that all keywords that have low competition are simple to rank for. This is also not true. While a good general rule of thumb is to work with the so-called “low hanging fruit”, many webmasters make the mistake of looking for keyword phrases having less than XYZ competition and then just working with these.

If the truth be told, searching out these low competition keywords should only be the start of the research you should perform. You can have keywords with less than3000 competition being very hard to rank for, while some with over 10,000 could be easy. There are other considerations to take on board as well. Some of these include backlinks and page optimisation.
