Explanation About All The Meta Tags

Meta tags are html tags that are used on a website to relay information to the search engines and the web browser used to view that webpage. Meta tags can be used for search engine optimization (SEO) to set the geographical location of your site amongst other stuff, the meta tags can also be used for non search engine optimization techniques like telling the users browser to redirect them or refresh the page after a set time.

I will list the main meta tags and tell you a little about them.

The first tag is the meta keyword tag which is used for search engine optimization as this tag tells the search engines what keywords you are trying to promote on that page. You should keep the each meta tag different on each page, never copy and paste meta tags from other pages as that will be classed as duplicate content. The keywords in the meta tag should only reflect the keywords you used within that particular page, try to keep everything relevant.

The next meta tag I will talk about is the meta description tag which is still used today by the search engines but not so much weight is given to them. The meta description tag again should be relevant to that particular webpage and should consist of a short snippet explaining what that page is about. The meta descriptions are displayed next to your website in the search engines and if google thinks that the meta tag isn't relevant to that particular page it will make its own description to display next to your site. It is important to use your main keywords in the description but make sure its user friendly and again most importantly it has to be relevant to your site.

The third tag is the meta geo tag which is designed to tell google where your website is hosted so it can display your site to the relevant regional search engine. The meta geo tag isn’t important now days as you get to specify the location of your website in googles webmaster tools and google can work out where you site is hosted from the server ip.

The last tag I am going to mention is the meta refresh tag which is mainly for user purpose and tells the browser to refresh after a set time. The meta refresh tag is not search engine friendly so dont use it unless you know what you are doing.
