Carport – What To Know Before You Get One

by Earl Pine

As with most construction projects, there are a number of important considerations in building a carport. Careful thought and planning of a carport can save you money and headaches down the road. A lack of planning might very well result in a finished carport that fails to meet your needs or exceeds your budget. Below are the five most important things to consider before building your car port.

1. Where will you find carport plans. There are a number of different ways to obtain decent carport plans. You might design and plan your carport yourself. You can buy a packet of pre-designed architectural plans over the internet. Alternatively, you could buy a pre-fab carport kit? Another option is to hire a contractor who will design the carport on your behalf.

2. What type of construction materials will you use for your carport. If the carport is to match your house, you will needs to find materials that will match. This might be difficult if your house is of a certain age. In the event, you can?t find a matching brick or siding what materials will best compliment the existing structure?

3. Where will your carport be located? Try to think of the pros and cons of different potential locations before making a final decision. If the car port is beside your house you can share a mutual wall and thereby save some money. Perhaps it would be best for your carport to be a stand alone structure near your house or behind the house.

4. What do you want to achieve by constructing the carport? Make a list of goals you want to meet with your carport. Carports generally provide some shelter from the elements, be it sun or snow. Are walls necessary to achieve the intended purposes ie. prevent snow drifts or prevent exposure to a setting sun? Are you expecting to store things in the carport. Will you need to include shelves or cabinets?

5. Enquire about Building permits and possible restrictions. Are you even allowed to build a carport on your property? Many neighborhoods have restrictions on the types of structures that are allowed to be built. There are costs associated with building permits and they may be prohibitive. There may also be lengthy waiting periods.

Do your homework before building a carport. Sit down and brainstorm with a friend. A failure to plan is a plan to fail. As previously stated, the most successful construction projects are those that are carefully planned in advance. Good luck with the planning of your carport.
