How To Keep Your Data Recovery Cost Low

by Brian Reese

If you need to use a data recovery company to help you retrieve files or other data that you have lost then your first priority will probably just be to get it sorted out as quickly as you can. Whilst finding a solution here is great, this shouldn’t be done without keeping an eye on the costs that you will have to pay.

Unfortunately, when we lose data, we often need a solution urgently. This usually means that we don’t spend enough time assessing the options open to us. Your aim here, after all, should be to get a solution that works as quickly as you can and that is cost effective for you.

But, the urgency that we feel here often means that we pick the wrong supplier. Sometimes we pay more than we need to for effective data recovery services and sometimes we may even shell out our hard-earned cash without getting our data back if we choose the wrong provider.

The easiest way to make sure that you keep your data recovery costs low is to try and take the time to talk to a few companies before choosing one to work on your problem. This will give you an idea of different costs and options so that you can assess which solution will work best for you.

You also need to ask specialists about the projected entire cost of a project to retrieve data. A fixed price package is often offered for this kind of work. Sometimes these costs can seem higher than hourly costs but this really depends how much work is involved. More complex problems may be cheaper with a fixed cost than an hourly charge.

It is also important to work out how much the data recovery service will cost you if the company/expert cannot fix your problem or retrieve your data. Some companies here will work on the basis that they will only charge you if they can fix your problem and get your data back. This kind of solution, however, is generally reserved for smaller and less complex data retrieval services such as restoring data from a portable storage medium, for example.

In all cases, it is most important to make sure that you get a quote for any work done here before it begins. Often you cannot be given a quote for actual data recovery costs until the company has had a chance to find out what went wrong and how to fix it. You should, therefore, always ask for a written quote that outlines all possible costs before giving anyone the go-ahead here.

You can, if your or your staff are technically literate enough, try to fix the problem yourself which will obviously be the cheapest option. Do bear in mind, however, that taking this route should only be done if you are confident of finding a fix and not making the whole situation worse. This could actually see your costs rise rather than drop.
