Planting Seeds in your Garden

by Chris P. Rodstein

Gardening can get expensive. When it comes to getting the plants in the ground, you can plant seedlings, plant large plants, or sow seeds. Sowing seeds is the cheapest route because all you have to do is buy a couple packets of seeds for a few dollars. Once your soil is prepped, you can start sowing.

One way to sow the seeds is by sowing them in trays and growing them first, and then transplanting them into the garden. First, get some planter trays. Fill them with soil, pat it down, and moisten the dirt. Sprinkle the seeds over-top, spacing them according to the directions. Cover them again with a small layer of dirt and pat it down.

Eventually after a few days the seeds will begin to grow. After a few weeks and after the danger of frost, transplant the seedlings into your garden. This is a great way to sow the seeds because you are only planting the best seeds and they have already started growing so they have a better chance of survival.

Another way to sow seeds is to sow them directly in the garden. After you have cultivated the soil, read the instructions on the back of the seeds packets. Make sure it is the right time of year and that you are doing it right.

Make sure you wait until there is no possible danger of frost. For example, if you live in the northeast, it would not be a good idea to sow seeds in mid march. There are still possibilities of frost and cold nights. Wait until the ground is warm and the time is right. When it gets that time, first plan out your garden. If you are planting vegetables, make sure you have rows correctly labeled even before you start planting.

Make sure your soil is well fertilized and has the right amount of nutrients. You might need to do a soil test first to be sure. Now follow the instructions. Make the holes spaced out and as deep as the directions say. Sprinkle the right amount of seeds into the holes, cover them, and water the seeds.

Plants will soon begin to sprout. If you have more than one seedling growing in one space, weed the weaker ones unless the packet instructions say otherwise. Weed and water your garden on a regular basis to keep it growing healthy.
